While Bethesda’s masterpiece may not leave the toilet seat up or always ignore the fact that the dishes need doing, it sure has some shonky moments and glitches. It’s a game we appreciate, adore, and value like a significant other in spite of its flaws, not for its absence of them. Skyrim is a fantastic and much-beloved experience, certainly, but don’t go thinking for a moment that it’s flawless. Along the way, it’s become a popular culture phenomenon, so much so that a throwaway line about “taking an arrow to the knee” became a worldwide meme sensation. Originally released back in 2011, it has since been ported to just about every system known to humankind.
Needless to say, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of these games. That’s the impact titles of this caliber can have. Somebody will state that it’s their first time ever playing such-and-such a game, and somebody else will tell them how lucky they are, getting to experience this momentous game for the first time.
When games are remastered and/or become available on a new system for the first time, a familiar exchange will occur. They’re rare to come by, but when you’ve been touched by one, it impacts on your life and you never forget it. There are some video games that tower above others as they define genres, make players lifelong fans of franchises, and/or change the industry around themselves.
